Thank you so much for such a throughly analytical article. Yes contrarian behaviour does make sense. These days they have Artificial Intelligence buying and selling stocks without human intervention! AI can analyse a volume of historical and current data that no human team of analysts can even begin to fathom. But one criticism being directed against such tools is that everybody else will also start doing the same thing and if a majority of investors are doing something, it will affect the market in ways that will make it less profitable. The solution to this dilemma, according to the people using the AI is to get the AI to do something different. So yes, contrarian investing/trading equals gains. Even more informative for me was the article Where is the market heading, in which you have defined P/E, P/B and Dividend Yeild parameters for buying and selling. Thank you for that. It seems that if one just follows these simple principles, one should be able to make money in the stock market. I have a favor to ask of you. Just like you notify us of the FII and DII action on a daily basis, which is greatly appreciated, but also available on sites like Money Control etc.; could you notify us of the Nifty50 P/E, P/B and DY values once they approach the buy and sell signals. I guess you do that for individual stocks when you recommend buys and sales, but what about Nifty50? BTW the AI is located in Singapore but trades in the NYSE. It's creators say that 'even if we all die, It will still keep on trading!' THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!

Yeah it's true. The media gains by sensationalising the news whether political or whatever. So stock market reacts instantly to breaking news but when the stakeholders and investors analyse the news later on, they react logically.

      Hello Mr. Karkhanawala,

Rightly said. But, at the end of the day, it is the retail investors that suffer due to the euphoria/misery created by the media, which is used by the institutional investors by sell/buy more accordingly.

GOOD ARTICLE REGARDING PANIC SELL IN THE MARKET DURING MARKET CRASHES YOUR ARTICLE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT NIFTY RECOVERY OR RISE WITH IN A SHORT PERIOD BUT SOME STOCKS OF NIFTY 50 ARE KILLING THE INVESTORS EVEN AFTER A YEAR WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR MY COMMENT

      aug 09,2016 at 07:34

      Hello Mr. Venkatesh,

Thank you very much for your remarks. Always keep in mind that, during crashes, it is the mood of the market that gets hampered, and not fundamentals. Also, you will always see that the recovery after a crash is in a particular sector/s which is followed by others.

Sometimes, it takes time for the market to give back the actual deserving price to a stock, but it does happen, sooner or later. End of the day, everything depends on the company's business model and its fundamentals. And like the great Warren Buffet rightly says, "If The Business Does Well, The Stock Eventually Follows!"; One should have patience and confidence on his/her research. This is corroborated from his saying "If you are not willing to own a stock for 10 years, do not even think about owning it for 10 minutes."

      Hello Ms. Khattar,

Stocks must be purchased based on proper fundamental valuation techniques, and not based on external market factors. These factors must be used for adding quality businesses in your portfolio at relatively cheaper valuations during a crash.

You can add these companies when the market conditions start to stabilize, which can be understood by the behavior of the industry leaders of that particular stock sector. It is a well proven fact that the small caps most of the times, follow their larger peers, which is exactly why you should follow them too!

Quite correct, frank & good article narrating facts. In fact, the media itself deliberately misguides investors, especially the retail invester as they tend to believe media. The bugger brokers & so called analysts on CNBC &other business channels ,with an intention to earn their bloody livelyhood tell all so called good things without telling actually what is happening to the business or shown by their balance sheets.

      Hello Mr. Arun,

Rightly said. It is their job to create a euphoria and say all the rosy things about a particular scrip, or the market in general. We never hear the possibility of things getting better in a crash and vice versa.

I appreciate the tone of the article and the facts cited. I am of the strong view that the economic news channels simply echo their Masters' Voice. They have their own agenda and vested interests. There is no substitute to research by oneself. Like we wade through the traffic before we reach our destination, we just need to navigate and leave the noise outside only.

What is needed is staying power . Lack of money and fear caused by one's eroding portfolio value in bad times causes alarm bells to ring forcing unwise decisions where none might be required . In fact , desire to buy would be deferred due to the prevailing market conditions .

Rightly written. But media is not always wrong. Before november december 2008 media from january to october constantly made cautious views on stocks which was i also think correct one. No one can time this market. I also agree that madia make hype of anything which make retail investor to sit on sideline. But those retailer who have watched 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015-16 closely they will not miss the oppurtunity easily. Yes it is true that no one is perfect in this market but good analyser can surely bet on three times out of five. Good analysia from your end.

      Hello Mr. Sanjit,

Thank you very much for your remarks. It is not that media is 'wrong', it is just that the media hype is never to be trusted. And yes, you are spot on with the fact that investors who have had a close look at the events in 2008, 2011, 2014, etc, will most probably not be affected by the short termed hiccups! This is what makes them seasoned campaigners.

      Hello Mr. Kohli,

Thank you very much for your remarks. Frankly speaking, there is no way that one can predict the market accurately. But yes, as an investor, you can definitely analyze the future potential of a business, which is the only thing that will help you appreciate your wealth. Like the great Warren Buffet rightly says, "If The Business Does Well, The Stock Eventually Follows!"

A good factual analysis. Holds good on overall basis but during such meltdown and subsequent recovery , the mix of script one holds is crucial as rate of fall or recovery depend more on fundamentals and long term inherent strenght of a stock. Therefore, quality stock recover much faster as compare to stock with weak fundamentals.

      Hello Mr. Chaube,

Thank you very much for your remarks. And yes, you have mentioned your point in the most apt manner, that, at the end of the day, it is the fundamentals of a stock that matters and nothing else. The better the fundamentals and growth growth story (past as well as the future), the better the chances are that the investors will give the stock the value it deserves (after a market crash).

if anybody can predict, market trends then there will not be a market. uncertainty leads the market in to prediction, prediction gives the earnings vice versa

      Hello Mr. Thomas,

Nobody can predict the market and that is exactly what we are trying to convey. Apart from this, nobody can change the fact that it is the fundamentals of a company that will determine its price and nothing else. Yes, the trend of the market does play a role, but in cases of bull and bear markets, it just undervalues or overvalues it, respectively.

So as a wise investor, one should spend time in finding quality businesses rather than speculating. Like the great Warren Buffet rightly says, If The Business Does Well, The Stock Eventually Follows!
