Indian equity benchmarks ended lower on Monday, extending the cautious trend amid renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Weakness across IT, metal and realty stocks weighed on sentiment. The BSE Sensex declined 382.62 points, or 0.5%, to 76,132.81, while the Nifty 50 fell 118.55 points, or 0.5%, to 23,779.15. On the technical front, Nifty support is placed at 23,600–23,700, while resistance is seen at 23,900–24,000.

US Market Recap

US stock futures traded cautiously as escalating Middle East tensions pushed oil prices higher, adding to concerns over persistent inflation. S&P 500 futures slipped 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures edged up 0.1%. European markets were also mixed, with economically sensitive sectors under pressure as rising inflation concerns pushed regional bond yields higher.

Asian Market Update:

Asian equities opened slightly higher, led by gains in technology stocks. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 0.2%, while South Korea’s Kospi advanced 1.1%. Japan’s Topix, however, slipped 0.4%. South Korean memory-chip makers were among the top performers as renewed optimism around artificial intelligence supported technology stocks following the launch of OpenAI’s GPT-6 model.

Commodity Check

Crude oil remained near $100 a barrel as investors awaited further details of a reported Iran-Oman agreement aimed at protecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Strong Chinese crude purchases also supported prices by tightening global supply conditions. Brent crude has gained 1.6% over the past two sessions, while WTI remained above $92 a barrel. Gold held steady near $4,400 an ounce as investors weighed Middle East tensions against a weaker US dollar, which supported demand for bullion. Spot gold rose 0.1% to $4,409.68 an ounce, while silver gained 0.1% to $66.22. Platinum was broadly flat and palladium edged higher. Copper extended its strong rally to hit a record high on the London Metal Exchange, supported by expectations of broader US tariffs on refined metal imports. Three-month LME copper futures climbed as much as 0.8% to a record $14,533 per tonne before paring some gains.
