India Market Recap

Indian equity benchmarks extended their winning streak for the sixth consecutive session on Thursday, November 5, supported by strong buying in Auto, Financial Services and Banking stocks amid the weekly expiry of Sensex derivatives contracts. The BSE Sensex surged 2,008.61 points, or 2.60%, to close at 79,310.01, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 576 points, or 2.40%, to settle at 24,536.60. The sharp rally reflected strong buying interest across key sectors and sustained positive momentum in domestic equities. However, Indian markets may face volatility in the upcoming session, tracking the sharp decline in US equities and weakness across Asian markets. On the technical front, Nifty support is placed around 24,300–24,400, while resistance is seen in the 24,650–24,750 range.

US Market Recap

US equities witnessed a sharp sell-off on Thursday, November 5, reversing part of the strong gains recorded following the Democrats' victory in the US midterm elections. Investor sentiment weakened amid renewed selling pressure in technology and artificial intelligence-related stocks, raising concerns over elevated valuations and the sustainability of AI-driven investments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.14% to 52,737.20, while the S&P 500 fell 3.09% to 7,451.32. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite witnessed the steepest decline, plunging 4.80% to 24,484. The sharp correction reflected renewed risk aversion, particularly in technology stocks, as investors reassessed growth expectations and market valuations following the recent rally.

Asian Market Update

Asian equity markets witnessed heavy selling pressure on Friday, November 6, tracking sharp overnight losses on Wall Street as a significant correction in artificial intelligence and technology stocks weighed on investor sentiment. Japan's Nikkei 225 plunged 6%, while the broader Topix declined 5.20%. South Korea's Kospi recorded a particularly steep fall of nearly 9%, triggering circuit breakers and a 20-minute trading halt. Meanwhile, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.70%, while New Zealand's NZX 50 slipped nearly 0.50%. The broad-based weakness reflected heightened risk aversion across regional markets, with technology-heavy indices facing the strongest selling pressure.

Commodity Check

Crude oil prices edged higher on Friday, November 6, with Brent crude trading around $99 per barrel, although prices remained on track for a weekly decline of nearly 13% amid growing expectations of a possible de-escalation in the US–Iran conflict. Brent crude futures had gained 3.80% on Thursday to settle at $98.29 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advanced 2.70% to close at $90.52 per barrel. The recovery followed Wednesday's sharp sell-off, when both benchmarks declined more than 8% to their lowest settlement levels since August 31. Expectations of diplomatic progress strengthened after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress in the midterm elections, potentially limiting political support for President Donald Trump's military operations against Iran. Meanwhile, Tehran is reportedly reviewing proposals submitted by mediators regarding its nuclear programme. However, uncertainty surrounding the conflict and global energy supplies remains elevated. Iran has maintained that the US naval blockade of its ports must be lifted, sanctions eased and frozen assets released before it fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
